Expat Learning Curve Drops from 9 Months to 3 Months

SUMMARY: As one of the largest banks in world, this firm sends thousands of individuals who are the top performers in the company annually on short and long-term global assignments each year. However, many of them take a long time to find their stride when relocating (particularly those assigned to the Middle East and parts of Asia) due to steep learning curves & feeling unprepared with what little training they received. The company worked with the Cultural Intelligence Center to design a program to more effectively equip and support the leaders going on global assignment.


RESULTS:  3-6 Month Program | Early attrition rate dropped by 15% | Replicated program on smaller scale for more frequent travelers |  Average time to feel “fully functional” in roles dropped from 8-9 months to 3 months | Increased confidence and effectiveness of expats

SUMMARY: University with one of the most esteemed business schools in the world didn’t have a tangible means to assess and develop intercultural competence and global skills among their students. The Cultural Intelligence Center worked with the administration to develop a leadership program that would involve every undergraduate student in the business school.

Revised Study Abroad Program Leads to Increase in CQ Scores

SUMMARY: Organization works with individuals and universities to send thousands of students on study abroad programs each year & prides itself on running programs that truly immersed students in the local culture. They began using the CQ Assessment before and after students traveled and discovered that only one of the four CQ capabilities was consistently increased through their programs—CQ Knowledge. The organization worked with the Cultural Intelligence Center to do a complete audit of their programs


RESULTS:  2 Weeks – 1 Semester Program | CQ Strategy and CQ Action scores increased by more than 15% | T2 (Post-Trip) CQ scores were significantly higher than the worldwide norms for CQ. | 10% increase in post-trip ratings received by students, parents, and university partners who implemented program |

CQ Case Study – University

University of Michigan Students Prepared for Global Workplace

SUMMARY: 169 students participated in a variety of faculty-led, study abroad programs in different locations around the world with the goal of determining the impact of the study abroad experiences on students’ cultural intelligence. Each student completed the Pre- and Post CQ Assessment. The study abroad office worked with the Cultural Intelligence Center to develop a strategy for effectively using the assessment and supporting curriculum to more strategically use the programs to improve CQ.


RESULTS:  2-8 Weeks | Students showed significant improvement in three of the four CQ capabilities (CQ Knowledge, CQ Strategy and CQ Action) | Increase in scores has positive implications for their effectiveness in the marketplace. | Improvement in following skills (Cross-Cultural Adaptation, Intercultural Judgement, Cross-Border Negotiation, & Strategic Leadership Effectiveness) |
