The Cultural Intelligence Center announced today that its new Implicit Bias in Healthcare workshops have proven overwhelmingly popular with healthcare professionals in Michigan. Just a few weeks after introducing the courses in May more than a thousand professionals have completed the workshops.
Keyla Waslawski, VP Sales and Marketing, attributed the popularity of the new courses to three things:
“First, these courses are not the usual lecturing about bias. Yes, we acknowledge the fact that bias is a universal human tendency, but the focus of the workshop is learning to recognize bias and responding in ways that mitigate bias in ourselves and others;
Second, our courses are designed by and facilitated by experienced healthcare professionals, so they are full of real-world examples of ways to respond to bias;
Third, we recognize that healthcare professionals are busy individuals with challenging 24-7 work schedules, so we offer training sessions at various times each week, including weekends and evenings.”
Comparison of pre- and post-training surveys demonstrate that 94 percent of the participants reported that they were better able to recognize and deal with bias in themselves and their colleagues. Participants expressed special satisfaction with the research-based contents of the workshops and the emphasis on realistic practical application of the materials. Example comments include:
“I will use the information I learned today to be an advocate for my patients.”
“Equity is more important. That is the biggest thing I learned today!! Great bicycle picture!”
“Be aware and apply – Drive, Knowledge, Strategy, Action – a great model!! Disrupt Bias!”
Designed to Comply with the Michigan LARA Mandate
The Cultural Intelligence Center has been training healthcare professionals for years. The training emphasizes the development and application of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) – the ability to work effectively with people who have different cultural backgrounds because it provides a unique and highly practical, non-polarizing approach for dealing with bias.
The new State of Michigan LARA Mandate for Implicit Bias in Healthcare Training that became effective on June 1, 2022, requires all healthcare professionals in the State to undergo regular implicit bias training as a licensing requirement. In response, the CQ Center worked with several healthcare institutions and associations to develop one, two, and three-hour training sessions that meet the specific requirements of the mandate, while also offering practical professional development skills. Each course is lead by a professional facilitator in a live virtual environment. Each course includes the required pre and post assessments, and all professionals that complete a session receive a verifiable, encrypted badge and certificate.
In addition to complying with Michigan LARA requirements, many professional associations recognize these courses for continuing professional education credits, and several courses each month are specifically accredited by the Michigan State Medical Society. Many healthcare professional associations have partnered with the Cultural Intelligence Center to offer special pricing for their members including the Michigan State Medical Society, the Sault Ste Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Michigan Veterans Home and the Ophthalmic Specialists of Michigan.
