We sit down to get to know better one of our newest employees and Staff Accountant, Kristian Memo.
How do you describe what you do for a living to family and friends?
I tend to start off with my job title. This typically will lead to several requests to assist with their tax returns. After declining those requests, I’ll provide a brief overview of my responsibilities. If that doesn’t work, I just tell them “I work with numbers”.
What’s the most interesting project you’re working on right now?
There’s been a couple to choose from, however the most interesting would have to be expanding and building out processes for our international branches in the UK and the EU. Its exciting to be apart of building and further bolstering the foundation that is our international presence.
What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?
Always strive to learn as much as possible. Ask questions, read policies, sit in on meetings, anything that can provide any extra knowledge or information on how the company operates and why they operate the way they do. Knowledge and experience are two of the most valuable things that you can acquire.
What motivates you?
Most of my motivation comes from internally. I always strive to be better than I was the day prior, in both my professional and personal life.
How do you wind down after work?
I like to wind down by going to the gym and for a walk afterwards. It gives me an opportunity to really focus on being in the moment, and I find that to be extremely peaceful.
What is your favorite part of working with the Cultural Intelligence Center?
I would have to say my favorite part would be working with the number of different customers, in varying industries from all over the world and being able to see the impact that the services we provide have.
What’s your secret talent that no one knows about?
I’ve always been good at drawing. I loved watching cartoons growing up and started drawing my favorite ones. Eventually, I got pretty good at it.
If you could get a new skill in 10 minutes, what would it be?
To learn a musical instrument, any instrument really. I am extremely nonmusical and have virtually no affinity for any instrument so I can’t be too picky on what type of instrument.
Are you more productive in the mornings, afternoons or evenings? Why?
Mornings, especially late mornings after a few cups of coffee. That’s peak productivity time for me. There’s just something about copious amounts of caffeine hitting your system that really gets you ready to tackle your given tasks.
What’s a topic you wish you knew more about?
Astronomy, hands down. Theres so many interesting things about space and the vastness of it that makes me so curious about the possibilities that are out there.
What’s something that has surprised you about your chosen career path?
I think what was most surprising was the amount of crossover and collaboration with different departments. I would have never expected just how involved we would be in all the areas of the company. It really gives you a better understanding and appreciation of the other departments and roles.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I would really like to see myself continue to grow in my role, expand my knowledge and help guide and assist CQC in achieving and exceeding their goals as a company.
