Does Cultural Intelligence (CQ) enable empathy with people whose values or principles are diametrically opposed to your own? If so how? Or does CQ suggest a different approach to such interactions?
CQ does not automatically create empathy. It creates the conditions where empathy becomes more likely, even when values clash.
CQ trains you to do three things in those moments:
- Notice differences without judging them first.
- Separate behavior from intent until you have more context.
- Look for the logic inside another person’s worldview, even if you disagree with it.
When someone’s values oppose yours, CQ pushes a different move than agreement or approval. It asks you to understand how those values were formed. That includes culture, upbringing, environment, and lived experience.
CQ also has a limit. Understanding is not the same as endorsing. You can fully understand someone’s position and still hold your own boundaries, disagree, or choose not to engage further.
So the CQ approach looks like this:
- Understand first.
- Reflect on context before reacting.
- Respond with clarity about your own position without dismissing their humanity.
As Maya Angelo once said, “nothing human can be foreign to me.” It reflects a CQ mindset. It shifts your focus from rejection to curiosity. You are not saying you accept the belief. You are saying you can understand how a person arrives there.
Leadership Beyond Your Perspective
Culturally Intelligent leaders recognize that empathy is a crucial part of effective cross-cultural engagement. They listen deeply, are curious to understand others’ perspectives, and create psychologically safe environments where everyone feels valued.
Can stepping away be what moves you forward in your leadership journey? Cultural Intelligence facilitators Athena Rayne Anderson (Ph.D., M.Ed.) and Quinton Pretorius have designed a CQ Safari Learning Journey where the African bush becomes your classroom, your mirror, and your teacher. On this new Learning Journey, you’ll discover how CQ mirrors the rhythms and wisdom of the natural world. By pausing the hectic pace of life, you’ll connect more deeply with nature and honor it’s profound lessons. This experience will take you to the Eastern Cape of South Africa to develop your leadership skills among some of the planet’s most iconic wildlife.
