How can leaders deal with cultural and diversity fatigue in a polarized climate?
Each person responds differently to pressure, so there is no single fix. Cultural Intelligence (CQ) drive matters here. It is about what keeps people engaged when the work feels heavy.
What helps in practice:
- Reconnect people to purpose.
- Remind teams why the work matters. Link diversity work to real outcomes like trust, fairness, and better decision-making.
- Use intrinsic motivation: People stay engaged longer when they see personal value in the work, not only compliance or targets.
- Build confidence and self-efficacy: Break the work into clear, achievable steps so people feel progress instead of overwhelm.
- Reduce isolation: Fatigue grows when people feel alone in the effort. Create spaces where people can share experiences and hear they are not the only ones facing resistance.
For me personally, when things get difficult, I go back to why I started doing this work. I also rely on being around others who share similar values, because it reminds me that I am not carrying it alone.
Leaders who manage fatigue well do not push harder. They reconnect people to meaning, capability, and community so the work feels possible again.
