Knowing Your Own CQ Strengths and Weaknesses

There are three major benefits of understanding CQ. The first major benefit is increased self-awareness.

Learning specifically about your CQ should give you personal insights that help you to capitalize on your strengths. Knowledge of your CQ capabilities (CQ-Strategy, CQ-Knowledge, CQ-Motivation, CQ-Behavior) can help you become more strategic, knowledgeable, motivated, and flexible.

Awareness of CQ Strengths
Knowledge of CQ can help you build on your strengths. For example:

  • If you know that you are strong in CQ-Strategy, you know that you will typically invest time and energy in thinking about cultural encounters and interactions.
  • If you know that you are strong in CQ-Knowledge, you know that you understand ways in which cultures are similar and different.
  • If you know that you are strong in CQ-Motivation, you are curious about other cultures and you seek additional experiences with those who have different cultural backgrounds.
  • If you know that you are strong in CQ-Behavior, you know that you change your verbal and nonverbal behaviors in response to cultural differences.

Awareness of CQ Weaknesses
Knowledge of CQ can also help you improve in areas where you are not as strong. For example:

  • If you know that you are not particularly strong in CQ-Strategy, you can set a goal to plan more carefully before inter-cultural interactions. You can remind yourself to look for ways in which multi-cultural interactions differ from what you expected. You then can enhance your mental models of how culture influences interactions.
  • If you know that you are not particularly strong in CQ-Knowledge, you can set a goal to learn more about culture, cultural values, and cultural differences. You can read about other cultures, attend events that highlight other cultures, ask questions, and travel with a curious and open-mind.
  • If you know that you are not particularly strong in CQ-Motivation, you can think of ways to reward yourself for becoming more interested in other cultures. You can consider both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards and could explore these issues with others who are higher in CQ-Motivation.
  • If you know that you are not particularly strong in CQ-Behavior, you can pay close attention to the behavior of others when in situations characterized by cultural diversity. You can analyze their verbal and nonverbal behaviors and then you can work to modify your own behavior accordingly.

Given the increasing globalization and diversity of social and business interactions, understanding your CQ should have both personal and professional benefits.
