CQ and Study Abroad

When well lead, study abroad experiences are transformative. They change the way people view themselves and the world. In addition, study abroad can powerfully enhance cultural intelligence (CQ).

Enrich your study abroad programs by assessing participant's cultural competencies with the only evidence-based assessment of cultural intelligence (CQ) and by providing them with personal development feedback. In addition, you can use CQ Summary Reports to evaluate your study abroad program and assess the extent to which the program enhances participant's intercultural capabilities.

We offer the following online assessments and personalized feedback reports for Study Abroad CQ Programs.

Study Abroad CQ Self-Assessment

This assessment is a self-inventory of the four CQ capabilities, and it also includes questions designed to trigger self-reflection specifically oriented toward study abroad experiences. Participants complete online surveys and receive a 12-page feedback report. Reports include scores for the four CQ capabilities, comparisons with the CQ worldwide norms, and reflection questions to guide interpretation of the feedback. This assessment works best when done twice: T1 (pre) and T2 (post) study abroad experience.

Additional Services for Study Abroad Contexts

Study Abroad CQ Multi-Rater Assessment

Multi-rater assessments can be used effectively in study abroad programs when participants work together on projects before and/or during the study abroad experience. Participants and their observers complete online surveys, and participants receive a 20-page personalized feedback report.

Feedback on Individual Cultural Value Orientations

We can add assessment and feedback on Individual Cultural Value Orientations to CQ Study Abroad Assessment Programs. Participants receive enhanced 14-page feedback reports with information on cultural intelligence as well as their personal preferences for seven individual cultural value orientations (e.g. individualism vs. collectivism, low vs. high context, etc.). Note: individual cultural value orientation feedback is automatically included in CQ Multi-Rater programs.

Before and After Assessments

CQ Study Abroad programs work best when set up to include two assessments: with T1 (pre) and T2 (post) feedback. Participants complete pre-departure surveys that include questions on their reasons for participating in study abroad and questions designed to trigger reflection about what may occur during their study abroad program. Each participant receives a personal feedback report on their CQ and guidelines for thinking about how to use and enhance their CQ during the study abroad experience.

After completion of the study abroad program, participants complete a second online survey that helps them reflect on their experiences and make sense of them. They then receive a second feedback report that they can compare with their initial feedback.

CQ Summary Reports

Study abroad leaders and organizations can request CQ Summary Reports with aggregated results for a group of participants.

Summary reports include demographic characteristics of participants, comparison of participant scores with the CQ worldwide norms, distribution of participant scores (low-moderate-high), and interpretative observations and implications.

CQ Summary Reports for specialized programs also include information on the distribution of individual cultural value orientations, comparisons between sub-groups of participants, comparisons between self and observer ratings, and/or comparisons between T1 and T2 scores.
